Standing in the Shadows of Motown
Wanna catch a flick tonight? There's a documentary out now about the Funk Brothers, the rhythm section for Motown records in the days when many of their most classic records were produced.

Trane and the Cute One
Yesterday was a good day for music geeks to listen to NPR's Morning Edition. They had separate segments on both Paul McCartney and John Coltrane.

It's not hard to see the invisible hand of the artists' respective record label PR deparments in this. McCartney's tour is now underway, and there is a new reissue of Coltrane's Love Supreme that came out recently as well. Still, both good segments for my money.

If you dig around in some of the past radio segments on the Coltrane one, one of them mentions the Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church. There's some great religious art featuring Trane on the website, and of course, they must have some of the best devotional music around.

File sharing is unstoppable
At least according to the conclusions of a few research wonks from Microsoft(!!)

The Register gleefully reported on the research: a fun article, if you're of a technical bent.

Doghouse Roses
Sometimes two different jobs require all the same strengths. Case in point, Steve Earle, song and short story writer. (Salon.com review)

A biography is coming out January 2003 as well.

Gigging
What do your favorite folk, hardcore funk, country, and rap acts all have in common? They all got to plug the show. Man, this would have been fun to see. (Via Mefi.)

Josh Rouse
Alt-country that listens to The Cure! Cool.

Check 'im out. Why the heck do I have "soul" listed down there? Listen to some Lambchop (the lead singer of which, Kurt Wagner, recorded an EP with Rouse) and check out the tune Under Cold Blue Stars(sorry - icky bn.com sample link).

Village Voice on rap rivalries
An article in the Voice adding more ink to the recent hype about rivalries in the rap world. The piece is mainly useful as a scorecard of recent rap rivalries (in case you care: I for one listen for the grooves, not the b***shit.)

Nonetheless, it's not without insight:

According to a 2001 Justice Department report, blacks were six times more likely to be murdered than whites. Of the 7903 black victims of homicide in 1998, none were famed rappers—a fact that might help blame-seekers like O'Reilly search deeper before making oversimplified claims of "dangerous people." When it comes to murder, to borrow from rap duo dead prez, it's bigger than hip-hop.

What's this?
I Like American Music will give you a music nugget a day. It could be an article about a new record. It could be the website of a band you've never heard of. It could be my latest polemic against the record industry.

I make no guarantees that you haven't seen the links I present already. I work for a living, unfortunately I can't be 100% timely. But I do promise that if you come back every weekday, there'll be a new tasty morsel to satisfy the curious music nerd palate.
